You may not know this (I didn’t) but Barbados, unlike most of the rest of the Caribbean Islands, is not a volcanic island. Put simply it is made up of limestone, sands, sandstone and clay. That means rain, and acid rain, will over time carve out caves.

If you are staying either in Bridgetown or like me at the Radisson, it is quite a ways to get to the Harrison’s Caves but I think it is worth the trip.

There is a bunch to explore outside the caves including a nature walk. While we did not see them there are monkeys and so much tropical to see. But on to the caves. You can select and pay for a walking tour or, for the normal tourists, a tram tour.

The welcome center (not pictured) has an overview of the island and the geology and you begin with a short video describing this. We chose the tram tour next as they have carved a path through the caves.

I really enjoyed the tour but do be aware you will get wet. Not flume ride wet but the cave drips from everywhere.

Also, due to the tropical nature of the island, the cave is warm. This really surprised me. You will be fine in shorts as the temps and humidity are very high.

I am not a spelunker or caver. I cannot imagine cave diving, but I found this tour fascinating. The formations were spectacular.

Including the one above where they say it is in the form of a man on his bent knee proposing to his beloved.

I hope you enjoy this overview of some of the formations and what to expect from Harrison’s Cave. While out of the way, I really enjoyed the visit.

Lastly some other history not talked about in the tour from locals. There are other caves you can visit that are much less comical if you are adventurous. Also we were told the caves are all over the island and they can be a problem. Apparently now and then a home falls into a cave and the problem is not talked about as there is little they can do about it anyway. Just interesting to me!

Have you ever visited Harrison’s Caves or other caves when you were traveling? – René

Sorry to differ but I would prefer more Delta or hotels or Point oriented posts
