Delta GoGo service is not cheap. Delta GoGo service is not very fast (for now). But it is better than nothing and we need to be connected.
One of the nice features I have blogged about before was the GoGo text beta app for Android that lets you send texts for free (once you are online with GoGo that is). Now and then it even worked without paying for GoGo.
But just recently they updated the software. If you update the GoGo text app you will, when you try to use it, see the message below:
YIKES! Really GoGo? $1.99 to send a few texts? I don’t think so. I can use other methods like simply using email to text for free. I appreciate the service as part of my GoGo fee, but not for yet another fee as a Sprint user. Well is there a workaround? Yes, for now.
You can still use the OLD APK or app from GoGo text beta. You will have to, if you have updated to the new app, uninstall the new app, install the old app, and then finally turn off auto-updates for your phone to prevent the new one from upgrading.
Also, you will have to do all of this on the ground before you fly as the service has to send you a test text that is not possible once in the air. I did do a test text and the old app is still working but who knows how long that will continue.
Bottom line, this is a real disappointment to me. I use GoGo. I don’t mind paying for GoGo. I do mind having what equates to a “junk fee” to me to use what is already part of my expensive GoGo service. – Rene

Can you purchase and use the GoGo Text Pass without also purchasing a regular GoGo pass? I don’t use GoGo but might consider just the text pass so I could communicate with family and friends while inflight.
@Brad – Not 100% sure but my guess is yes. Agree that could be worth the price but when you already have GoGo pass it should not be more IMO.
@Brad-
Yes, I can verify that you CAN use Go Text Pass without also purchasing a regular GoGo pass.
I just did that last week.
If you’re on Verizon you can download their text app that sends via data/WiFi AND regular cell service.
I haven’t even opened the GoGo Text App in months!
