delta-com award fare sale

As a quick reminder, as I first blogged about 10 days ago and confirmed the next day, Delta has a fare sale of 30% off LEVEL 1 Delta award prices from a number of cities and today, the 20th, is “officially” the last day to book them. Keep in mind, if you are a Platinum or Diamond Medallion you can cancel award bookings up to 72 hours before flight so if you think you can make a trip happen this winter NOW would be the time to jump on these tickets!

The full list of airports you can get the deal from is:

Atlanta, GA (ATL) to Brussels, Belgium (BRU
Atlanta, GA (ATL) to Stuttgart, Germany (STR)
Boston, MA (BOS) to Paris-Charles de Gaulle, France (CDG
Baltimore, MD (BWI) to Zurich, Switzerland (ZRH
Detroit, MI (DTW) to Frankfurt, Germany (FRA
Detroit, MI (DTW) to Paris-Charles de Gaulle, France (CDG)
Detroit, MI (DTW) to London-Heathrow, United Kingdom (LHR)
Detroit, MI (DTW) to Zurich, Switzerland (ZRH
Jacksonville, FL (JAX) to Zurich, Switzerland (ZRH)
New York-Kennedy, NY (JFK) to Frankfurt, Germany (FRA)
New York-Kennedy, NY (JFK) to Zurich, Switzerland (ZRH)
Minneapolis, MN (MSP) to London-Heathrow, United Kingdom (LHR)
Oakland, California (OAK) to London-Heathrow, United Kingdom (LHR
Philadelphia, PA (PHL) to London-Heathrow, United Kingdom (LHR
Philadelphia, PA (PHL) to Zurich, Switzerland (ZRH
San Jose, California (SJC) to London-Heathrow, United Kingdom (LHR)
Sacramento, California (SMF) to London-Heathrow, United Kingdom (LHR)

The T&C on Delta.com tells us that travel “may begin on or after October 20, 2015 and all travel must be completed by February 29, 2016.” Next some questions and answers about this deal.

What if I already have flights booked for these routes on these dates? If you are a Platinum or Diamond elite just call and have them reissue the ticket for the lower amounts and confirm space is there before you cancel your old tickets. If you are NOT a Platinum or Diamond consider if the lower SkyMiles price is worth the cost to change or BEG the rep to waive the fee and see what happens.

Can I use PWM or Pay with Miles and earn MQMs for this trip? The T&C says: “Pay with Miles tickets are not eligible for promotional redemption amounts”. Sorry this would have been nice!

Can I fly on Delta partners like  Virgin Atlantic   for this award sale? Nope, other than partners like Delta Connection flights.

open jaw with delta award sale

Can I do a Delta  OPEN JAW ticket  with this award sale? Sure, just make sure, as already talked about, you are only choosing Delta metal flights to get the lower award pricing (does NOT need to be a nonstop flight).

I am not sure of my vacation travel dates, can I book now and change them later? If you make any changes it will cost you more miles after today and possibly a change fee. The only exception would be if there is a schedule change on Delta’s part that allows you to keep the lower booked price and not have to pay any fees at all no matter what your status is.

What if I am a few points short? How do I get some SkyMiles FAST? If you have AMEX Membership rewards points from say the Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express, then you can transfer them to your SkyMiles account. They transfer over almost instantly and most times all you have to do is log out and back into your SkyMiles account and they will be there!

This really is a great value and a good way for many to have a fun winter getaway and also burn up some SkyMiles balances that may have gotten out of hand. Do you have any other questions regarding this sale? Fire away – Rene

This Promo aside (and thanks so much for mentioning PWM), perhaps a possible topic for Rookie Wednesday and a mistake on my part: PWM VS. Miles AND Cash. PWM gives you MQM’s etc. Miles & Cash does not correct? I assumed (wrongly) they were 1 and the same. No value whatsoever from what I can tell using the Miles & Cash method other than using a bit less miles PLUS allot of cash for BE to Europe.

@Scott – Are you talking upgrade with miles? Not sure what Miles & Cash you are talking about. I have tested both 1st class and coach PWM and both earned MQMs and Delta.com says you now earn them (however some readers have had issues in coach and have to fight to get the MQMs as a warning).

FYI, I’ve seen 7-day trip fares from HNL/LIH/OGG/KOA-CDG/AMS at 48k RT in late October, wide open in November for HNL-CDG (LIH/OGG/KOA-CDG/AMS only early Nov). So flights are not limited to leaving from the mainland for all those Hawaii flyers.

@Rene While I’m searching for seats on a specific flight and choose Miles, it shows my an options for both Main Cabin and BE. I could choose from: “Mile Miles”, OR Miles AND Cash.
Miles and Cash seems to be different then PWM which as you know is the last step before purchasing the ticket where I’m given a choice (I assume as a DL AMEX Res. holder etc) to apply miles 10K per for every $100 off the ticket, PWM seems to give full MQM’s, Miles AND Cash doe not.
