Earning my Platinum Medallion status, after reading tips from Rene’s Blog DeltaPoints, I have had a lot of fun as an elite flyer and reaping all the benefits that come with it. With the current benefits erosion aside, one of the things that Rene has always said, and I wholeheartedly agree with, is that Delta FA’s, GA’s and staff are some of the best domestic staff around! It’s a shame us Platinum Medallions now only get two JWD (job well done) certificates to hand out (Diamonds get four, btw). I really wish there was a way to get more because I would be happy to reward the dedicated men and women who help keep the airline running day in and day out.
Anyway, last year as I headed to New York to run the Brooklyn Half Marathon it just so happened to be National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day. In honor of the day, Delta and Doubletree, part of the Hilton portfolio, partnered up to offer free Doubletree chocolate chip cookies at the JFK, LAX and MSP Skyclubs.
I absolutely LOVE Doubletree chocolate chip cookies (yeah, perhaps a bit too much). The Doubletree cookie is a staple of the DoubleTree brand, presented warm and gooey at check-in, and practically every time I walk near the check-in desk and ask.
I had my best HHonors points redemption ever at a DoubleTree in Beijing China (40k points for 4 nights!) and even in China, I had my fair share of those amazing cookies.
As a Delta Platinum Medallion I did not have complementary Sky Club access, and I don’t have the Delta Reserve card that gets me in either, so I jokingly tweeted to Delta how lovely it would be if they were to bring me some cookies out from the Sky Club. I didn’t even see their reply in flight, that they would try, and I was really only being half serious anyway. I sure didn’t think they would actually take me up on the offer.
To my absolute shock, in the Jetway were two Delta agents asking for me. They had TEN DOZEN DoubleTree chocolate chip cookies. It was just amazing! You couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. So in an effort to pass on the generosity, I passed out most of the cookies to the passengers at the gate waiting to board the next flight. Trust me I saved plenty for myself!
It turns out the agents were part of the Delta 360 team. When they’re not looking after HVC making connections and helping with their itinerary and so on, they’ve known to every once in a while offer these kinds amazing gestures. They’ve even helped out with honeymoons & marriage proposals. Just one more of the reasons I do stay loyal to Delta, despite all the 50+ changes to the loyalty program.
The moral of the story is, expect the unexpected when you shout out or ask Delta social media folks for something out of the box, like about to become a million miler or something else big or small, as you never know, they could surprise you too! – Noah Mark
