Could it be that another double miles perk is on the way out with Delta? What else may be affected.

no miles for other airline rebooks

FlyerTalk has been on fire this week with new finds including this yet unconfirmed info that re-bookings onto Delta from another airline will now not earn you any points. Most disappointing.

You see way back when, that is in the NWA days, when you got re-booked due to a bump or whatever you often were re-booked in “Y” class. Sure, this is still the case today you may say, but back then you earned points based on the Y class fare instead of your original fare like it is today. It is great to see this part of Delta IT is working and working well.

Now it seems yet another tiny little perk is about to go the way of the dodo bird (not good to be wingless when talking aviation anyway). Until now, you could double dip when things went wrong. That is, say you were booked on American, and they re-booked you on Delta, then you could ask American for route credit and put in your Delta frequent flyer number and get Delta credit for the Delta legs you ended up flying.

Most times this did not amount to a ton of points but it was a nice way of making a situation that was often less than desirable (due to the need for the re-route and booking to begin with) a bit better. That is, it went something like this:

“Man, I hate having to connect this way and get there this much later but at least they are getting me there and I will get a few extra points for the issue.”

If this indeed is true I am not sure how Delta will make this happen when they put us on other airlines that is, if you are already flying Delta and they put you on AA or UA etc. Will they code it in some way that the other airlines do not issue frequent flyer credit? Why should Delta care anyway if another airline pays out points when it does not cost Delta anything extra? Now I can see it the other way round but even then the coding to accomplish this may be interesting.

Here is also the really scary part that could be on the way next. Delta could decide that all OTAs, that is, online travel agency tickets, will no longer earn points and only those booked at Delta.com will. Not really that far fetched and many of these sites do mix and match airlines to get you the lowest price. Why reward flyers for booking on these third party sites rather than paying a higher round trip fare at Delta.com. Clearly another big perk of NOT just booking on Delta.com is that you can score sometimes a mixed 1st and coach all on Delta metal that you cannot book on Delta.com!

All of this really is speculation at this point and often medallion reps have wrong or bad information but I would not at all be shocked to see this come to fruition soon. Last year I did get both United and Delta credit after a mechanical issue and rebook.  Have you seen any evidence of this yet in your travels? – René

I don’t see this as an issue. It impacts a very tiny percentage of us. I don’t see them taking away points from third-party bookings but could see them reducing it to say 75% of points or miles. That’s not unreasonable.

@FNT – Yep agree for the most part. I can see OTAs all coding as consolidator fares one day. They are already via UR points selling E class fares as MJ posted about and most will not know what they are getting! 🙁

    René –

Yes, this happened recently when we were flying Alaska to Hawaii and they had issues, re-booked us on a Delta flight and we were denied any credit from Delta. I raised the issue with them, yet they were unyielding.

And yes, we had both (+wife) of our SkyMiles numbers included on our new Delta tickets at check-in for the replacement flight (we even got upgraded – go figure) but denied ANY flight credit miles/points/rubles/pesos.

Given that SkyPesos are not very much in the first place anymore, is this a big deal?
