Have you ever had to have a ticket reissued by Delta for some reason like a schedule change or even a person need to adjust the flights? If you do, most times, Delta is really good about either collecting additional fees that may have been incurred, or refunding taxes and fees if things have changed in your favor. But not always.
The above screen shot is from: Delta.com and then “My Delta” and “My Trips”. Once you are there you can click on whatever trip that may have changed. Lastly, if you then click on “view receipt” you will be able to see a breakdown of all the fees and costs regarding the ticket.
In my case, I ended up having an illegal connection on my award trip later this summer to Sweden (clearly booked at Level 1 business class – see E7 posts) that required a change from connecting through England to get to Amsterdam (and then on to Sweden) to a more direct routing that avoided the need to connect in England at all. However, upon reissue of the ticket the “United Kingdom Passenger Service Charge” fee was not refunded to me. This was clearly a mistake as Delta cannot charge me a fee for just flying OVER England. 😉
I called back to Delta and they again reissued the ticket, correctly this time, and refunded the $23.40 per person tax back to the card I used to purchase the ticket.
Also, especially when it comes to award tickets, do not let Delta try and tell you that there is some higher award price now to have the tax refunded correctly. The tax and fees for an airport or country you are no longer connecting trough has absolutely nothing to do with the number of miles required for the award. If they try to push that on you escalate it up to a supervisor. If they say no just tell them to leave it as is and HUCB until you get someone who is willing to do it correctly.
Lastly, if all else fails, this is a pricing issue so you can escalate it to the DOT. In this last case you are unlikely to get the fee back, but these kinds of complaints do not look good and the airlines do not like getting hit with these kinds of complaints. I doubt it will come to this as, again, they are clearly in the wrong and should fix incorrect issues like this. – René
