Yeah, Delta “airline” food really is very good! Truly (you should try it).

If you have been reading the blog for a while you know I am really a Delta “fanboy” when it comes to most Delta food. Folks, it really is quite good. DeltaONE food, that is transcon, or better yet international meals can be just excellent. But offerings like the cold steak you see above is just nummy and I would be happy to have it quite often on Delta (I just wish they would bring it back).

What they do offer on a regular basis is the calzone. It is often PACKED with pepperoni and I have to say I very much enjoy it as well. And the side plate of cheese, fruit and the little chocolate square to finish off is just refreshing and truly enjoyable. Even the tiny salad is most times fresh and pleasant.

One thing I have not had in what seems like FOREVER is the mushroom soup. This is truly delicious and I wish it would be offered more often. The other soups are just OK and the only one I really dislike is the tortilla soup and wish they would never bring it onboard again.

Even the Delta burger is quite OK. Now I am not saying I would order it on the ground, but it really is quite an acceptable choice. The potato salad is nice and when accompanied with the fruit and cheese plate I am always a happy flyer.

Even when it comes to desserts they are often very nice. The chocolate cookie and cake for example with a Woodford “neat” is just an outstanding way to finish off a meal at 500 MPH at 32,000 feet.

The other thing I am REALLY missing is the Salted Caramels they at one time had lots of in the snack baskets and now seems to have gone away. I love these things and they are also UBER pleasant with a Woodford neat (yeah, yeah most things are good with a Woodford neat – I know)!

What are the few things they could still work on? The domestic wine is just so-so. They at times run out of Woodford on flights. But these are minor issues and just being picky.

So why this musing especially after the rookie post #100 all about Delta food? There are so many times via email or on twitter or in other places where folks say MEH about airline food. Maybe that is true about other airlines – but not Delta! 🙂 What do you think about Delta food? – René

    None of that food is remotely healthy. You’d be better off carrying on McDonald’s, which is fresh. I suspect most of the Delta food are frozen TV dinners warmed up.

      @FNT – Not talking health food here. Talking taste. McD’s is clearly junk food and should only be eaten every now and then at most. Same thing airline food – if every day I would say stick with salads and I do now and then when flying days in a row.

    I too like a lot of the food in ONE. On a recent ATL-SEA RT, I had a great and healthy beef salad (slices of nice medium cooked beef over a vinegar based slaw), bread sticks, fruit and cheese (brie and cheddar), and an apple strudel on the outbound. Very yummy. On the return, it was a salmon salad nicoise with a nice chunk of salmon in place of the traditional tuna, again with the bread sticks, fruit and cheese, and a tasty square of chocolate cake. Both meals were excellent, so excellent, that I complimented the chef on delta.com after each flight. I did not choose the pepperoni calzone, but after your review Rene, I will try that next time I see it. It seems to me that the food is much better on flights to and from the West Coast and along the West Coast than on the routes along the East Coast.

    Well, they could work on having enough. Frequently they run out of the only acceptable option by the time they get to some passengers. (All too often that means by the time they get to me.)

    @NFT, I stay away from salads on airplanes based on what a very friendly CO flight attendant told me once on flight in BusinessFirst to Europe. This was the setting. When the salad course came out (yes, they used to serve one course at a time), it looked so yummy — green and fresh — perfect in every respect, I called the FA back and said something like, “Wow, this salad looks so good and fresh, I wish salads on the ground at my favorite restaurants looked as great.” She retorted with, “Yeah, it looks great, you know what, they spray those salads with so many chemicals to make it look like that, that you could leave that salad out for a week, come back, and it would look exactly the same.” I said, “Honest?” and she said, “Honest!” Since that time, I eat minimum salads on planes. (Most likely everything on the plane is extra high in preservative content, but her words about salads haunt me to this day.)

    I can’t say I’ve had the same experience with the food I’ve been served in a Delta economy cabin. Their “signature” roast beef slider was barely edible.

    Rene…you obviously have not ridden in the cheap seats on an Internationsl flight in a long time….the food is unfit to eat and the included wine is the cheapest box wine one can find….enjoy the flight…

    @Rene: I suppose taste is a consideration, but healthy food need not taste bad. As for McDonald’s, please. I eat McDonald’s three times a week. The $1 side salad an grilled chicken breast (they call it a patty) from the ala carte menu is delicious and extremely healthy for you. Even in first-class/business-elite (or one), the meals are cheap. Barely better, if at all, than a frozen TV dinner,

    @Don: If you thought your salad was healthy — and let’s say, for the sake of discussion, it was — then you ruined your meal by eating the bread, cheese and desert! That piece of cake alone had to be 500 calories.

    Sorry, Rene, I have to disagree with you but then, my first class flights have been in the 2-3 hour range. I flew dtw-msp recently and neither my husband nor I could eat what they served. And, my husband eats just about anything you out in front of him. The salad was limp wit lots of black spots and the chicken was so rubbery neither of us could even cut it for fear of slipping and making a mess. Same on the return flight. And, trying to get a drink, well, that was even harder to do . . .

    Sorry, Rene, but I have to disagree with you but, then, my last first class flight was just over three hours. We flew msp-las and the food was inedible and my husband eats just about anything you put in front of him. Glad I didn’t eat the salad given what Don says he was told. The lettuce was limp and more black than green. The ravioli was hard as a rock. I’ve forgotten what dessert was but by then i wasn’t interested in even trying it. And, to top it off, trying to get something to drink was an adventure . . .

    Agree with two notable exceptions, I stay away from chicken now having never had a good one and airlines should never serve an egg entre. Never had a good egg breakfast on Delta or any other airline.

    Not too excited about Delta food, but the meals served on my recent international business Skymiles flight on their partner, Virgin Australia, were drop dead delicious! The consulting chef is Luke Mangan of the Glass Brasserie in Sydney.

    I agree with you Rene….the food is good! I like the Asian Chicken Salad (noodles with chicken and an Asian type dressing). Now there are some bad ones (the sandwiches with the exception of the burger need to go away) and if they are going to push FCM they need to upgrade the meals on the over 1500 mile flights. I flew ATL-LAS last night and it was a piece of tiny chicken with rice that had no flavor…also included brocolli and squash and a salad all of which were good……it did not include dessert though which was a surprise!

    @Francine, I have flown on DL’s new partner Virgin Atlantic, ATL to LHR in Upper Class (BE) 3 times now, and the food is wonderful, just as you say about Virgin Australia. Furthermore, because I am a stickler about getting my first choice meal, I try to choose my seats accordingly, or speak to the purser about my choice before he (it was always a he) comes around taking orders. On all occasions, I was told, DO NOT WORRY, WE DO NOT RUN OUT OF MEAL SELECTIONS. Unlike DL, they actually stock a lot more more meals than people in UC, so that everyone gets their first choice. But now that DL owns 49% of Virgin, I wonder how long it will be until the DL bean counters end this practice!

    Sorry I’m kinda late posting here. I like Delta, but let’s be honest, serving a burger or a calzone is really cheap in “First” class. These are items that used to be served for free in coach in the 90s.
