Since we can not make phone calls on-board Delta flights (and GOSH I am happy with that choice from the mothership), having the ability to text on-board is very nice via GoGo. If you are an Android user, they have expanded the carriers who can use the GoGO text “beta” app for Android devices.
Now here is the tricky bit – you have to sign up and send a text on the ground before you can use this in the air (and accept a REALLY long EULA – I think I gave them the right to name my first born child GoGo).
That is because it has to send out a “test” text before it will allow you to use it via GoGo up in the air.
And as you can see that is not possible without first doing the ground based text and confirmation.
Once you have done that correctly you are good to go. The service does work reasonably well and has been fast even when GoGo has been slow.
Some other thoughts. It would be nice if they could in some way build this feature into the normal GoGo app itself rather than requiring it as a stand alone app. In other words it does add another step to first log on to GoGo, then “fly” the little jet along the runway to launch the service.
What do you think? Have you tested the GoGo text program yet? Does it work well for you with your service provider (would love to know just who you use)? – René

René,
I have been using the free texting service with my Tmobile Note-2, which by the way, they claimed was not compatible. Tmobile makes it real easy with gogo, all I had to do was turn on the wifi calling function of the phone and click on the tmobile link.
My Note 2 died last week and now I have an LG G3 and will be flying next the week of 3/14 and will see how it does.

René, this is the one time I’ve been able to use an Android with a GoGo service and it work as planned.
Neat service and helpful.
With just about any smart phone you can access Google Apps for free as well as stream Amazon Music that is in your playlist. I use Google Hangouts for my chat client and have always been able to message with friends while in air. It doesn’t generally work on tablets or laptops and sending pictures/video doesn’t work – only text.
Text messaging is a thing of the past. The world has moved on to messaging over the internet such as iMessage and Facebook messenger. Don’t really see too much potential in this, just improve the wifi service!
@Chris – Disagree but those things are good too.
