airbus wins delta contract

Just a quick update that we will be, when flying internationally (and not doing any more stopovers), spending more time on A350 & A330 jets according to these two sources:

Leeham News  &   Yahoo News

Reports are that this news was supposed to be held until the investors day announcement that will include other news including many more ancillary revenue sources Delta is just giddy about. Translation for you and me is more fees and less perks.

I understand those who are passionate about Boeing and the loss of orders and maybe jobs for the company. I am very sad to see the 747 the QueenOfTheSkys going away from Delta’s inventory soon and not having 787s on the way is sad as well. At least to me.

Then at the same time I truly love the seats on the A330 (ie the new ones in BE) vs the herringbone ones one the 777 that to me are some of the worst BE seats that Delta has in the fleet.

What do you think. Like the call by Delta? – René

This seems like a sound choice. Im a big fan of the A330; I recently flew MEL-CAN-LHR on China Southern back to back A330 and 787 and the I found A330 more comfortable at the back of the bus. The standard economy seat is a little wider and the 2-4-2 configuration is preferable to the 3-3-3 configuration of the 787.

From a business point of view the A330 is an aircraft that can be ordered now and delivered relatively quickly. Airbus has slots available for deliveries that bridge the A330 production run until the A330neo is ready. I’m sure delta would get a good deal as Airbus have had trouble selling these slots. Delta likes a proven plane and it already has a competency with the A330. The A350 is a little more surprising, I’d have expected delta to plump for B777s in that size category but there may well be some advantages in common type rating for pilots across A330 and A350.

Well, having read the article, It suggests that it is, in fact the A330neo that is one the table. That surprises me, it also makes mention of a A321neoLR as a 757 replacement, something which hasn’t even announced.

I await the announcement with interest.

Hmmm……. Let’s see how this plays in SEA (home of Boeing) where DL is trying to get the airport authority to triple the amount of gates for DL as well as build DL a new terminal for those gates. Will SEA simply decide that business is business…….. or that DL burned them?????

I second what Don said. You would think that Delta would try to give Boeing the business to help with their invasion of Seattle. Seems like a dumb move on that front.

I’m sure these planes will be very nice as would new planes from Boeing. Does this cancel the 787s delta has on order and has the delivery schedule been announced?

@John – from my understanding all them are deferred from NWA days. not sure if they can take them or if they want them but I know they are sold out on 787s for many years!

    I agree that 2 – 4 – 2 is MUCH better than 3 – 3 – 3.

But I strongly prefer the 767 to any Airbus plane I’ve ever been on
