UPDATE 2PM EST: Kayak.de seems to be working from many cities (with multi day search) that then sends you Seat24.de to purchase. I suggest using Google Chrome browser to convert to English for you to make it simpler to search & book!

Also be sure to look at reader comments for more tips on how to find your own deal!

UPDATE 3:45PM EST: Kayak.se (the Swedish one works too) is showing Chicago to Kenya first week of December still for $250 USD!

UPDATE 10PM EST: SHOCKING still live and a few open dates in both 2014 and 2015. Can not understand why (most) my fellow bloggers are not YELLING about this one. Amazing value and points this year and next!

UPDATE 6AM EST 10NOV: The good news is there are still folks booking this deal and other routs to mid-east area. In fact, the December 3-8 ORD-NBO price has GONE DOWN! 🙂  The bad news is there are some reports of Wideroe canceling reservations. Just don’t book any non-refundable hotels etc until you know this WILL stick for you!

2PM 10NOV – DEAL NOW SEEMS DEAD

kayak-se serach page

**************

multi week search in nov dec

Our friends at Wideroe are able to book you for just over $200 a trip to Africa from NYC on Delta and Skyteam partners.

nyc to nbo

It is an amazing price. It seems you can only book this on Wideroe website and suggest using the multi-day search.

kenya from google

Dates are WIDE OPEN this year and next. This is a long trip in coach but what a deal. Do look from your home town as MANY other cities are close to this same price!

Some thoughts on the deal to consider:

1) DO NOT CALL THE AIRLINES
2) HT to FlyerTalk
3) $50 Visa needed and 6+ month valid passport
4) This is EAST Africa not WEST Africa
5) There can be safety concerns so be smart

Other things to consider are will you get full points this year or next. You should, but there is the chance this could end up as a consolidator fare but next year under Skymiles2015 that is not all that bad and could result in MORE points than this year. At this price it may be worth the gamble either way and I do think, but can not guarantee, you will get full points for2014 flights.

Let me know if you book and fly this – would love a reader trip report! – René

PS – Don’t forget I am giving away a $100 Delta e-Gift card this week

Rene OK thanks. BTW it appears to me to be dead now (last year ‘the deal’ was up a lot longer) – I just was on the wideroe site –

I got this back from wideroe this morning:

    Dear Customer
We were unable to complete your order. Your reservation has been canceled. Your credit card has not been charged.
The reason is that we do not have ticketing agreements with one or more airlines on your itinerary.
Please disregard the automatic confirmation we sent you by e-mail.
We apologize for the inconvenience and recommend that you book your travel directly from the airline’s website or via a travel agent.
    Sincerely,
    Widerøe Internet Booking

@ermintrude – I would not give up quite so soon. May be dead or not. BTW, even if dead, I was checking Delta.com and the prices are in the 5CPM range. Nothing like the deal, but still at Delta.com price could be a good run for the points this year!

Do you need a visa to fly there and turn around? Will USA gov Put constraints on flying Africa back to NYC? Is it on KLM?

@Nina – see post links for visa. it is east africa not west but will likely have more questions. yes parts are on KLM.

Couldn’t get a $200, but we managed ~$400 EWR-AMS-NBO in May, which is still a killer deal for East Africa. Wideroe seems to be blocking reservations to NBO in some parts of the sites, but if you search for an impossible fare (e.g. NYC to LA Century City (CCD)) it sends you a Norwegian version of the site that still works. Reservation was ticketed after about an hour.

@ Nina, no visa if you stay at the airport and you can transit visa at the airport if you have a 24 hour turnaround. I think it’s like $20.

Rene, thank you!! I was able to book this trip yesterday for $272 from JFK in mid February. It took me several attempts over 2 hours on Wideroe but I got it.

The itinerary showed up under my trips on Delta.com yesterday and today I was able to get Delta to assign me Economy Comfort seats on the KLM flights from AMS-NBO and back. So I’m hoping that my reservation is good and doesn’t get canceled by either Wideroe or Delta. Keeping my fingers crossed. Not applying for the Kenyan visa for another couple of weeks to make sure this thing sticks 🙂

@Rene regarding your comment ‘Can not understand why (most) my fellow bloggers are not YELLING about this one’
    – Earlier this year I briefly read (in a blog) about some potential upcoming legislation that may allow a blogger to be penalised for advertising a mistake fare. But then there was a debate about what constitutes a deal and what constitutes a mistake fare and of course there are intentional mistake fares… I didn’t pay much attention as it doesn’t have much direct significance to me, so just a guess that this is why the usual blogs passed on this deal whereas last year when the wideroe (united) NYC – MXP etc deal was up most of the usual blogs were all over it.
