So I booked a flight just to visit a lounge (who does this)?

centurion lounge

Yesterday I booked a trip just to visit an airport lounge. Not just any lounge, but the AMEX Centurion lounge in DFW airport that my fellow blogger Ben, One Mile at a Time called the best domestic lounge in the USA and Gary, View from the Wing has equally high praise for as well. I will get in for free both days with my AMEX Platinum “airline travel card” that I got earlier this year.

From CWSI.net

First why. Well, it is more a why not just because I wanted to go. I made the time, and I guess more importantly I had $150 worth of vouchers and found an ok 8CPM (cost per mile) routing from AZO (Kalamazoo) that is only a little farther away to me than SBN (South Bend). I could have pushed the route down near 7CPM but I gave up a little to have a more relaxed departure time and longer time in DFW. The rest of the ticket I paid for with my Barclay’s Arrival card and will pay myself back with all these shopping portal points I have been amassing so the net cost out of pocket for me for air will have a CPM of ZERO! Yeah, I will have a little bit of cost in gas, 2 days parking at $9/day in AZO but that is about it.

rewards as a spg platinum

Another reason to go is to burn up last year’s SPG 35% off SPG points discount coupon that is about to expire. Using it for just one night is a very bad redemption and it could be worth tens of thousands of points but using it is better than letting it go in the trash. So I got my room for 4500 SPG points and $7 tax.

So I will enjoy a day flying Delta (hopefully all in 1st class), Get some quality Centurion lounge time including dinner, next day breakfast and lunch, and another day of flying around the country. I will have 6 “bumpertunies” to add to my already nice year of voucher gains and a chance to checkout another SPG property. All in all a nice way to spend a couple of days. Who does this? I do, because it is just so much fun – and with points and point cards you can too! – René

Why not fly to Vegas? Wouldn’t that have been a better place to visit the amex lounge and spend the points? The amex lounge in las Vegas is just as good as DFW. (I’ve been to both a couple of times)

Having breakfast in the Centurion Lounge at LAS while reading this. I love this place!

Did you read yesterday that Delta said they would be bigger in Seattle by revenue than anyone else by the third quarter of this year? Pretty amazing.

Right, I completely forgot about the spa. But LAS is prob still a better place to burn that 35% certificate

It sounds like great way to spend time even if it’s not a MR. I personally don’t have that kind of time and I don’t travel for business but I do know that front of the plane can be quite relaxing.

The Centurion lounge in LAS was great!! Very nice atmosphere and food was just brought out when I arrived, there was only a handful of people there as well. If DFW’s Centurion lounge is anything like LAS it’ll be worth the trip 🙂 Have fun Rene!

I was able to go in the lounge in DFW last month and since it was so GOOD I have totally changed the way I fly just to be able to enjoy this lounge. Now, I plan on time to visit the lounge when I land in DFW and when I leave. Such nice people, great drinks – love the corn ‘n oil drink – and great food. Massage and manicure?! Yes, sign me up! The one drawback is that it is so good, I can hardly stand to walk into a Delta Sky Club now!

Reminds me of the good old days when we used to purchase one-way refundable SQ F tickets between SIN-KUL and spend the afternoon/evening drinking Dom and eating very well in the SilverKris F lounge, cancelling our booking shortly after entering the lounge. SQ soon twigged to the scam and rebranded its regional F service as C/J thus making the accessible lounge less attractive.

DFW nice club but getting tired of the same chicken medallions, grits and pumpkin soup. We need to change up the menu.
