40k amex plat

The  Platinum Card® from American Express  has just refreshed it’s offer and now you can earn 40,000 points after you spend $3,000 on purchases on your new Card in your first 3 months.

In my opinion, this is a great card to hold due to all the perks it gives like:

★ $200 / yr. airline incidentals credit (including Delta if you pick them)

★ $100 GOES or Global Entry Fee credit when you pay with the card

★ No foreign transaction fees

★ SPG Gold status complimentary as long as you are a card member

★ Lounge entry (only YOU after 1MAY2014 with Delta Skyclubs) when flying most airlines. Also includs entry to AMEX Centurion lounges for you, your family or you and two guests!

When you look at all the perks above , and now the larger new member bonus points that can be sent 1:1 to Delta Air Lines, it makes this a good choice for your next round of cards ( Terms and conditions Apply )! – René

This may be a silly question… but regardless: With the Delta Platinum Personal Amex (the Delta one, not the regular Plat Amex that was featured in this post) if you spend $25,000 in one *calendar* year, you receive 20,000 pts. My question to those of you who have had this card longer than I have: Do the points post shortly after you finish the spend? Or do the points also post at the end of the calendar year? I suppose this also applies to any card with a calendar year spend. I haven’t had one of these cards for a full year yet, still a newbie :0)

Joel, I’ve had that Delta Platinum Amex card a while. Once you spend the $25k the 20k miles will post shortly thereafter. Might be a week or two but you don’t have to wait until calendar year end.

    @Neal
Thank you! That’s just what I wanted to hear. I would, of course, like to finish the spend with plenty of time to cancel the card before my annual fee comes due in December.

@Joel, believe it’s 10k points after $25,000 spend and 20k total points after $50,000 spend.

@Jason @Joel – yes 10k after 25k spend by 31DEC each year. Then another 10k once 50k spend. Most find points post, as Neal said, a few weeks after spend or at the latest 2-5 days after statement close. Keep in mind annual fee does not count as part of the 25k spend!

There must be a push for new Plat cardholders now that the fallout from the recent announcements has been realized. 2 new public offers, and I just received an upgrade offer for my AMEX Bus PRG.

Just cancelled my Platinum card 6 weeks ago. Oh well maybe next time if before 5/1.

@Jim – no you have to wait 365+ days to get new card bonus and the 1MAY is just talk so far.

Speaking of annual fees… what are they (on both of the two “platinum” cards mentioned)? And on this (regular) Amex Platinum, when is that annual fee due? As soon as you are approved for the card?

I have the Delta Platinum, and have held it for multiple years now (thinking that the free checked bag and annual companion certificate more than covered the annual fee).

@LarsErikNYC – yes fee bills right away. You can sign up for the airline of choice to get the $200/yr credit right away (per year so you can do another one in January btw ie spending) and get your GOES right away and the SPG GOLD bump up etc etc.

So you think the May 1 “mayday call” is just talk? It would suck but more so for business versions. As you know many people put huge spend on business cards (myself included). I am not a “hit and run” customer just based on my overall spend. If I chose to lay off Amex for a year or so and then decide to come back the bonus seems fair for me bringing a significant spend back to them.

You may have already mentioned this and I missed it, but I recently received emails saying Amex has dropped the Foreign Transaction fees on our Delta Reserve card. Are they dropping it on all Amex?

Rene, my boss has both Amex Delta Reserve cards and the personal Amex Gold card. I have been recommending for him to switch to the Platinum card. What is “GOES”? I know what Global Entry is. Would he receive the new member bonus if he upgrades from Gold to Platinum? If not, can he cancel the Gold and apply for the Platinum?

@Samantha – GOES = Global Online Enrollment System for Global Entry. Simpler to say GOES. The AMEX MR Gold is in the same “family” as the Plat so either ask about upgrade and points or cancel and wait 365+ days for new card bonus.

So what are the benefits of the reserve vs. the platinum card? Both have $450 annual fees, and both seem to get me access to the skyclubs….platinum seems to even get me access to other lounges too. The platinum has the GOES credit and $200 incidental reimbursement too, so in theory this lowers the first annual fee to $150. From what I can tell, the only thing I’m losing is the 2x points for delta.com purchases. I got an offer for $50k MR points after $5k spend, so I’m thinking of jumping on this because it’s time to cancel the amex gold card as the fee is coming due.

@Jacob – I hold both. Why? Plat for all the reasons you say. Reserve for chance at 30k MQMs / year plus more upgrades plus more low level award seats plus BOGOF in 1st class on Delta works! Worth the fee for both to me.

Ugh….forgot about all of those extra perks. Lol. Guess I’m going to hold both too because I don’t think I can pass up 50k MR points. Another question for you: What on earth do you use the $200 incidental credit for? As a PM, I already get my bags checked for free, and I rarely buy any meals on the plane thanks to the HOOUs. Is there anything else that qualifies?
