RenesPoints Rookie

Welcome to a weekly feature on the Renés Points blog. Each week this series covers in a “rookie” way either a Delta or travel related theme and attempts to break down to a basic level each topic. You can read up on all the previous posts HERE. Now on to this week’s feature.

[youtube width=”300″ height=”250″]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3p9jdvcti-4

On Monday CNN HLN had a piece about TSA Pre Check and some tips of what to do and what not to do. I agree with some parts but not others. Either way they do touch on a very important part that you should really pay attention to – updating all your info at Delta.com.

  • Skymiles = Passport

If you are an elite with Delta, you will likely get TSA Pre Check automatically and this is one part I disagree with on the new report. But, it is critical your Skymiles info, i.e. your name, address DOWN TO THE LETTER matches what is on your passport. This will have a huge impact on your chances to get and keep and use TSA Pre Check as a Delta medallion flyer.

  • Known Traveler number

Now the next one I do agree with is getting your own Known or Trusted Traveler number and making sure that name & number are the same as your Skymiles info and the same as your passport info (are you seeing a trend here yet)? Having all of these up to date, correct and current will have a huge impact on getting or not getting to use the short line!

make sure you have the delta reserve card in your my delta profile as the number one card

Do you have a Reserve credit card? Is it in your profile? Do you have OLD, expired or inactive credit cards in your profile? Do you have many cards there? All of these are questions to consider. First off, knowing Delta IT as I do, I like to have just one card in my profile and it is a Delta Reserve card. You should see it on your My Delta page as well to ensure you are getting all the perks the card gives you and the same goes for the Platinum or Gold Delta AMEX cards. If you have old cards listed, please remove them for more chances at targeted offers as well.

all the things to update at my delta preferances

Then there is the detailed page of all your preferences. This can have an impact on your CrossoverRewards and much more. Just check all these details and MAKE SURE they are current. If say your phone number for text messages is old or wrong don’t blame Delta if a flight changes and you do not get notified (as they contacted your OLD bad number)! The little details matter and will impact you.

While you are at it, why not check your emergency contact, just in case, as well as some of your other preferences like car program you favor as well as your home airport etc.

So this is today’s Rookie suggestion – take the time NOW to update all your data for a better, smoother, faster and more rewarding Delta travel experience! – René

Thanks for the post Rene! I’ve been wondering what I can do to get on the PreCheck bandwagon. I had a TSA agent tell me last year that since I was GM I would be getting an invite from delta soon. Never saw it. Was hoping that after I make PM in a couple weeks I’d get an invite. Now I’m going to go in my delta account and make sure everything looks perfect. Hopefully 2014 will be the year it happens….

@Jacob – aside from getting your information correct on your Delta account, getting Global Entry is one way you can ensure that you get PreCheck. Rene has a good post on it here: http://deltapoints.boardingarea.com/2011/12/05/global-entry-from-the-us-government-get-it/

I have an interesting situation. I have 2 middle names and on my passport on page 2 with my picture it lists my first one only but under endorsements says “see page 27” on which it says “the bearer’s full legal name is . Which one should I have placed on my profile?

@james – hummm great question. I would ask (TSA) and delta IT may not allow 2 middle names anyway. hard one.
