Welcome to a new Sunday series that will be a bit like a fireside chat. I count it a privilege to be a part of an amazing group of Travel bloggers here at BoardingArea.com. But just how well do you know “your” BoardingArea writers? Are you reading all the blogs you should be each day? This series will help you get to know them one by one. Now on to this weeks chat.
I am so pleased to get to chat with one of THE most popular bloggers on BoardingArea today, that is Jen from Deals We Like. I think a ton of readers first found out about BA from Jen and her blog as she seems to pop up amazing deal after deal. I always love to see that blue banner and palm tree pop up on the BA home page as I know there is going to be something worth my time. Now lets sit down around the fireplace and get to know Jen behind all the Deals We Like!
Rene – Hi Jen. It is so much fun to get to chat with you. I am a big fan of your blog and, as I said in the intro, love to see what you have found for us. So what got you started blogging, blogging at BA?
Jen – I grew up with parents who would jump on the opportunity to get bumped. Almost every single vacation we’d go on (typically to Florida) we’d spend an extra night at an airport hotel and lots of vouchers in our pockets. At that time they’d easily give away $1,000 per person to get bumped. Since then I loved the concept of traveling and figuring out ways to fly for free. From college recruiting I landed a job as a consultant and spent 5 straight years traveling every Monday through Thursday (and obviously staying at a different hotel every night!). I absolutely loved earning the points and miles and would go out of my way to maximize my earnings – my co-workers thought I was crazy! I was talking about points and miles (and deals obviously!) so much that my husband finally bought me a URL and said “start blogging!” A few months later in Spring of 2011 I got picked up by BoardingArea and have been blogging ever since!
Rene – It is so much fun to see the spark that starts a great blogger like you. So that is the why. Now I just know this is the first question readers so want to know. Just how do you find all the Deals we LOVE, sorry, Like so much?
Jen – First off, my email inbox looks like a tornado went through it. I sign up to receive emails from every possible airline, hotel, deal-a-day site, etc. I am constantly surfing the web, checking my social media feeds, looking through slickdeals, and navigating my email.
Rene – So no big secret “source” that feeds you the stuff we love. Just a ton of hard work. Well, know we appreciate all that time and effort.
Jen – Nope! Just being totally obsessed with deals.
Rene – So you seem to have traveled a bit. Like most of us travel bloggers, we have had some amazing trips. But just what have points allowed you to do that you never thought you would do?
Jen – I have traveled quite a bit! While accumulating points when traveling for work my goal was to go on a honeymoon for free. The best part is that I was able to go on a pre-honeymoon and honeymoon and use hardly any of the points I accumulated. Hyatt was offering their faster free nights during this time and we went to Hawaii for 9 nights (for free using the Haytt free nights) and then Bali, Saigon, and Cambodia for the honeymoon (Bali and Saigon free Hyatt nights, and Cambodia we did use SPG points, but hardly any!). I even had enough vouchers from being bumped to go to Hawaii, but the honeymoon we did use points (and flew business class, which I never thought I’d be able to experience). These are just two examples of where points have taken us!
Rene – Amazing. Thank you Jen for taking the time to chat with me and to share what DealsWeLike brings to us each day!
I hope you have had as much fun getting to know Jen as I have. I hope you will find the time to add Deals We Like to your daily blog read as well as adding Jen to your Twitter follow and Facebook Likes. You can also get DWL posts via RSS as well. And, you can reach Jen via email at dealswelike@gmail.com
