Lisa and I have been enjoying our two week vacation on Grand Cayman Island. Currently we are both Platinum Medallion with Delta and booked our low level seats down here for 35k each and our upgrades cleared 5 days out. The flight from Atlanta was on an MD88.
This is off season down here and the flight was “medallion light” and since all medallions had been cleared, Delta offered upgrades for sale for $100 per seat but ONLY if you had K+ class tickets that few had or want to pay for as 3 seats went empty. I know this is a HUGE controversial issue for medallions and if you can find proof of a medallion NOT getting a gate upgrade they should have had, and Delta selling the upgrade seat to someone else PLEASE let me know as Delta CORP, and my own experience, shows they only do this when all have cleared (again sometimes you are NOT eligible even as a medallion).
Lunch was served and was good. I had the cold chicken with pasta and seriously it was just nummy and one of the best things I have had on an airplane. Lisa had the roast beef sandwich (tip grab some cheese from the Skyclub if you are going to order this as it does not come with cheese)!
The views of the Caribbean are just unreal from 32k. The water here is so clear and warm that diving is amazing. We have been underwater in Hawaii, Florida, Sweden and a few more places. This place is just one of the best to me!
We did our $400 ($200 each) tune-up class/dive required by the shop (it had been a few years since we dove last) and did 9 additional dives during the trip and can’t wait for my photos to come back and to share images of all the abundant wildlife at depth! If you dive, you need to come here.
The above is the view from our room we enjoyed each morning with the sun coming up on the east end of the island. We paid for just about the entire trip on Ultimate Rewards points from the resort to the diving (I will break this down later this week for you to see how great a deal and trip this is and the value of Skymiles and Ultimate Rewards redemption)!
Gosh I love this spot in the middle of the Caribbean and especially this part of the island is remote and far away from where the cruise ships come in and that is just the way we like it! BTW I am sorry for not responding to emails as fast as usual, but as you can imagine we have been a bit busy having fun! 🙂 – Rene
PS – If you have been putting off taking advantage of the great 50,000 point INK offers below, I would not wait much longer as these deals will not be around forever (hint hint)!

Thank you for this post and the following to come. I’ve been trying to plan a 10th anniversary trip for my husband and I in June using points, and I was hoping to go somewhere in the Caribbean. It seems like there are not a lot of “chain” hotels in the Caribbean to choose from where you can use points, so I’m really looking forward to your upcoming posts. We’ve already been to Aruba for our honeymoon, St. Lucia for a wedding and want to go to Bermuda with the kids, so I’ve been eliminating them.
I’m not familiar with Chase points so please advise… If you have different Chase cards i.e. Ink Bold or Sapphire, etc. Do all the points you earn from various cards get added to one account like AmEx does for Business-Gold, Premier Rewards, etc.?
Also, do Chase points transfer to other reward programs like Delta or Marriott.
@Divyesh – they are a great option to collect. You can not transfer them to Delta but to other airlines. I would rather use them to book travel as you get 1.25 cents per mile credit when you let UR book for you after you find the best deal like I did. I will break this down later in the week. The key cards to have are the Sapphire and the INK cards to earn and have the most and best options! – Rene
