Quiz time – Can you tell me, without Google-ing it first, just how long has Delta been Delta?
The answer is…… today – 84 years ago!
On this day in 1928, Delta Air Service was incorporated and named for the Mississippi River Delta region it served. The former name, Huff Daland Dusters, had served the company since 1924 when it became the first commercial agricultural flying company in the world. The company eventually became Delta Air Lines, Inc. in 1945.
Delta quickly moved into the lucrative field of passenger air service, offering flights from Dallas, TX to Jackson, MS as early as 1929. You think seats are scarce these days? Those flights could accommodate 5 passengers plus the pilot, talk about a cozy flight!
There are many branches of air service these days beyond passenger service, as we know. Sometimes we feel a bit more like “freight” than passengers too when your upgrade does not clear (I hate being the last one so you are #1 after everyone else clears)! They say that farming is the oldest profession, and I guess our Delta proves it with it’s agricultural roots! Carrot and dip from the Skyclub anyone? – René
