I encouraged you awesome Delta flyers the last time we spoke, to always use your points to upgrade on flights whenever possible based on my horrible food experience during my 8 + hour flight to Sweden. My upgrade allowed me to have a superior dining experience that included a nice wine selection. About that same time, I was so excited to read that Delta had introduced its Delta Winemaker series for Business Elite customers on transcon flights. It’s a unique selection of California wines chosen with the help of Sommelier Andrea Robinson.
Here is a list:
Santa Barbara-based Inception Wines will offer a Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Jonathan Hirsh and George Pitsironis, a former sommelier at Wolfgang Puck’s flagship restaurant Spago Beverly Hills. Robert Mondavi Winery in Napa Valley will feature an Equilibrium Fume Blanc and Merlot from Genevieve Janssens, Director of Winemaking. Janssens was named Wine Enthusiast’s 2010 Winemaker of the Year. Heidi Peterson-Barrett, winemaker and proprietress of La Sirena in Napa Valley, will showcase a special Syrah. Merry Edwards, winemaker and proprietress of Merry Edwards Winery, will offer a Sauvignon Blanc. One of California’s first female winemakers, Edwards has more than 35 years of winemaking experience. She manages five estate vineyards with her husband: Coopersmith, Cresta d’Oro, Flax, Georganne and Meredith. Dave Miner, proprietor and vintner of the Miner Family Winery, will feature a “Simpson Vineyard” Viognier 2011. Charles Krug Winery will also offer a Napa Valley Merlot from Peter Mondavi, proprietor and vintner. Established in 1861, Charles Krug Winery is the first winery in Napa Valley, producing the finest Bordeaux style wines.
Here is a list of the international selection:
Whites – Wente Riva Ranch Chardonnay, California, 2010
Tupun Torrontes, Argentina, 2011
Reds – Alert Bichot Mercurey, France, 2010
Castillo Yerga Rioja Gran Reserva, Spain, 2004
Champagne – Champagne Jacquart Brut Mosaique, France, NV
Dessert Wine/Port – Chevalier du Pastel Sauternes, Bordeaux, France, 2009
Portal 10 Year Old Aged Tawny Porto, Portugal, NV
Delta knows there is nothing better than an amazing glass wine to go along with their five course dining menu on international flights. However, if you don’t want to wait till your next Delta flight to check out some great wines, why not plan a day trip or weekend and visit your local wineries? Your travel agent can plan a wonderful getaway for you that could include a winery visit, gourmet restaurants and elegant accommodations.
I know California is known for it’s wine, but did you know lots of other states have very nice wineries like…. Indiana?! I recently toured a very nice one in Bloomington, Indiana which is 37 miles from Indianapolis. Oliver Winery!
My girlfriends and I not only enjoyed the wine, but the atmosphere. Oliver Winery is Indiana’s oldest and largest winery and is family owned and operated. It’s a beautiful property and just had a huge 40th anniversary celebration the weekend I was there! You can share a bottle of wine on the patio with friends, relax by the pond and have a picnic, or take a weekend cellar tour and learn about the art of wine making. I prefer white wines and I fell in love with Traminette during our wine tasting, but I encourage you to visit and discover a new favorite when you are in the area or make a stop while on your way to another destination (which is what I did, but you will have to wait for me to share that with you in the next blog post)!
I love this quote from one of my favorite California winemakers listed above:
“Wine to me is passion. It’s family and friends. It’s warmth of heart and generosity of spirit. Wine is art. It’s culture. It’s the essence of civilization and the art of living.” ~Robert Mondavi
Until next time! – Your friend – Tamara 🙂

Thanks Tamara – I have just put my wine to bed to sleep
for a year or two.
Time to go see what last year’s batch is like! – René
