Are you really a world traveler? How old were you when you took your first flight?

a pole with many signs

In the about me part of the blog I told you that my first trip on an airplane was long ago before I could even walk, I was even an infant in arms from Europe to Long Island before I was one!

close-up of a baby's face

You have to admit, your Delta Points blogger was the cutest passport baby ever! Now about my wife. Her first flight was at age 4 and she went to Hawaii (#firstworldproblems I know)! Anyway, we’ve both been frequently flying all our lives and consider ourselves far from the average traveler. And we are a strange group who think nothing of hopping all over the planet. At the recent Ann Arbor “DO”, an attendee literally had JUST landed from Europe to attend. For most “normal” people, that would be a big deal, for us, more like “oh, what class of service were you in”?

One of the most unique bloggers I have on my blog roll is Michel W Travels. He blogs about some of the koolest stuff and goes everywhere. Just look at his round the world mapper as to how many places he has already been. And he, like my parents did with me, has taken his little one out of the country before year ONE! You can check out his return trip as well!

My fellow blogger Mommy Points has “Little C” on an international trip right now as well and tweeted that this was her first shower ever and loved getting “rained on” and cried when she had to get out (a kid after my own heart)!

So what about you, why not share some smiles about how old you were on your first trip ever. How many places have you seen? Shout out and let us know! – Rene

I took my first international trip to Canada before I was 1, and had been to over 30 countries by the time I was a teen. My son had his first flight at 8 weeks and his first international trip at 10 weeks. My daughter had her first flight at 8 weeks but her first international trip wasn’t til 8 months. They both had 2 passports by the time they were 2 months (dual citizens). We are HUGE believers in traveling with our kids and showing them the world.

My son is 20 months old, he has now been to many cities in china, Australia, new Zealand, Palau, philippins, south Korea, USA. We currently live in Malaysia. He has been in international first and business class thanks to bmi, united and us airways points 😉

    Good morning Rene
I was 6 years old when my parents took me to fly to Miami, Fla. it was via Eastern Airlines and only prop planes were commercially used at that time. I remember hearing ” vibration” during the entire flight and could barely hear myself talk BUT I loved loved loved the flight. ! The FAs were very attentive to this little girl. I was one of the first among my friends to ever fly
I think the plane was called a “DC7C” but I could be wrong….. So long ago! Since then I was hooked on flying 🙂
    Happy travels!!!!!!

One. It was a TATL, as were all of my trips until I was 20.

Wheels up at 7 with Lufthansa’s DC-9. I still remember that I could go up to the cockpit and got an extra icecream :-). I don’t count, but should be close to 80 countries. Travel is the best language of all!

I was 22 when I made my first flight, on a TWA Constellation. I was taking our children ages 6 months and 20 months from San Fransico to Chicago to meet their grandparents. I am now 79, the “children” are 60 and 58 years old. We are all confirmed travelers and I plan to keep going till it is totally impossible for me to do so.

I was about eight months old, and we flew to France to live there for several months while my parents undertook research fellowships. I’d flown about 100k miles by the time I was 8, according to my dad. I had the travel bug for life! 🙂

I believe my first flight was when I was a couple months old. We lived in Asia when I was a kid and were able to travel internationally quite a bit. It wasn’t until I was in my 20s before I finally made it to more US states than countries.

I was 18 months old when my mother took me, on her passport, from London to California on Pan Am. They couldn’t make it nonstop in those days, so they used Winnipeg as a refuelling stop.

Ok…a departure from the trend above. I took my first flight when I was 25yrs old!! It was on LH761 DEL-FRA and since then I was hooked. Its been few years since then, and have taken many more international / intercontinental flights but I still enjoy the backward thrust when the plane starts its run to take-off.

just to add on…my daughter is on her way to arrive in the world in Oct’12, and we are planning to get her on plane by the time she is 3 months old! 🙂

In July of 1998, my first time ever flying, I went half way across the world from Asia to the US and ended up staying permanently. For a 10 yr old kid flying 24 hours it was pretty crazy, I felt the plane was incredibly big, but I’m certain if I were to do it again I’d notice how cramp it would be. If only I had known about frequent flyer programs back then!

    Thanks for the mention!

My first flight was when I was 11. My family flew from NYC-LA. We got upgraded to first class which was awesome.

At the ripe old age of 6 weeks old, I traveled from Jacksonville, FL, to Hawaii!

I am an Army brat. While Mom was pregnant with me, Dad received orders to relocate — but they couldn’t move right away because Mom was pregnant. They had to wait until I was 6 weeks old before travelling.

I’m one of the few late starters (well, one of the few who left a comment). I took my first flight at the age of 20, when the German Air Force took me to Canada. A few weeks later I flew to Malta (w/ Air Malta). Then there was a pause for 7 years, before my third roundtrip, this time to the US.
Now I am flying twice a year to the US (to West Coast, because of the miles).

I think I may be the lowest. Was a touch over 3 weeks old, going PIT to MDW on Capital. Joined the UA “100 Thousand Mile” club while in high school.
