For a holiday week the blogs have been ” a buzzin’ ” ! Lots have found a work-a-round for booking one way travel on Delta using either Membership Rewards or SPG points and sending them to KLM and then booking on Delta metal. Lucky has a great post about it as well as PM&M if you want to look over at their blogs. I would be cautious doing this as unless you can book right away, you may get stuck with points at KLM if they for some reason shut this down.

PM&M talked about getting medallion benefits for those flying with you even if on another PNR. But, you will be playing rep roulette at check-in as per the RULES you must be on the same PNR so be careful!

Also, we all know you can only grab seats if under 90 days on KLM right? Intra – Europe* (*must be business class to pick >90) that still holds true but there has been an update for international flights. I can confirm from both phone reps and from flights myself that 91+ days does work but you will need the KLM record locator number for the trip. Delta will give it to you if you call then just go to www.KLM.com and go to Manage my booking.

The ‘one-way’ option is not new at all and has been around for some years now (did it myself quite a few times). Thing is reward miles, SPG miles and FB miles are more valuable, so 100K FB is NOT the same as 100K SM. I am a PM with Delta, but whenever possible try to fly KL, overall beter service (like the EC product)…

Today, I had an interesting experience. I had 30,000 miles in US Bank credit card that I wanted to use up prior to canceling the card. Booked a Delta flight through their website and it was only 20,000 miles and $0 from MSP to MIA. Check Delta’s website, they wanted 32,500 miles plus $7.50 for the same flight.

Is it better to be a flying blue member through klm or air France? Or no difference? I.e., the program is completely linked (if I sign up through klm, air france web site will recogize me?)

@D – They are linked. Most are using the KLM side. – Rene

OK, I learned something new (maybe old for some of you?) from another blog and I used it today, and it SAVED me 100,000 miles. I needed to book a one-way Business Class from BCN-ATL. The price was 360,000 each (high level) which I am not willing to pay. I kept watching, some days it was 200,000 which is still very high (x2 tickets = 400,000). Today I read that I was being really dumb. By booking a ROUND TRIP (even if I don’t use the return trip) on a LOW LEVEL, it reduced the price of my One-Way trip! OK maybe obvious for some people but I never thought of it. So my One-Way BCN-ATL was 200k each. My return trip (ATL-BCN) which I will never use was priced at 100,000. So the combination price was 150,000 each RT! OK still not the BEST deal but it was enough for me to book it (because I really need this flight on a particular day and I am not able to be flexible, returning from a cruise which ends in BCN), and it was even for the Non-Stop. Anyway, the blog explained NEVER use a One-way, always book RT even if you have to use an open-jaw, it can lower your miles. So today I spent 300,000 instead of 400,000 for 2 Biz class. I am looking on the bright side because last year I xferred 300k from Amex for 450k DL miles (50% bonus) so I am telling myself I am still ahead. LOL. And my original outbound flight ATL-BCN before the cruise is only 50k each on United/LH in Business, so I figure the RT is really 200k each, not horrible.

@Jim A – yes Gary has a post up abut just that. I thought about it but for me it is just such a bad uses of valuable Skymiles and another REALLY bad thing that could happen, by not completing a flight, is Delta can review your Skymiles account. Is there risk for just doing this once ever? Doubtful. You know you can do that same thing with PAID tickets too. But if one day you find that Delta has CLOSED your account for doing this – yes it is against the rules – it will cost you many more Skymiles!
      .
That is why it is good to earn points on all programs to have if you need them.
