This will not apply to everyone but I hope it will get you to think and not leave skymiles on the table that you should have.
I love SAM’s club. My wife and I shop there all the time. But, SAM’s does not take AMEX cards including my go to card the DELTA RESERVE skymiles card. So what to do? SAM’s club does take WALMART gift cards to pay for a purchase. And if you look next to just about every SAM’s club you will find a WALMART. So, I go and load up my WALMART gift card with a few hundred dollars, paying for it with my DELTA AMEX, and then pay for my SAM’s club items with the gift card and am able to earn skymiles for the purchase.
There may be other ways to play this where you can buy a VISA or MC gift card and load it up from your DELTA AMEX to use at retails that do not take AMEX. I have not exploited this to the full as I do often have some cards I need to meet minimum spend levels on in my wallet.
But I hope this at least gets you thinking about what is possible. My opener says triple dip, how do we do that. This is where the store’s own rewards program comes into play. These are not as valuable but free is free after all. Let’s take BEST BUY for example. For every $250 you spend, if you are a member of their rewards program, you get a coupon for $5 off next purchase. Now, here is how I play this. Start at DETLA.com at their shopping portal (so I earn 1 delta point for every dollar I spend). Then, I search for BEST BUY. At check out I put in my BEST BUY rewards number . Then I pay for the item with my DELTA AMEX card and earn 1 more point for each dollar I spend. Thus I earn 2 ponts per dollar plus the small BEST BUY reward and triple dip on each purchase! Now I do warn you the Delta portal is run by “Cartera Commerce” that also runs the American Airlines shopping site and we have all had some recent experience with them.

Another great way to earn 5x Delta miles per dollar is with SkyMall (the same people who did the 25,000 promo last month). While the items they sell are limited, they will price-match with just about anyone so buy it there and get 5x points and then submit for the price-match!
